In a Tough Spot

It looks like we're not getting our co-op order again this month due to lack of orders this time. Last month our order was forgotten and never placed. This really puts us in a bind as I have not been able to source some of the items that I need to order elsewhere. I refuse to go another month without chicken broth. I haven't been able to source chicken yet, so it looks like I'm going to have to find that somewhere so I can make broth.

Thanks to the Murphy's Law Gods, right after posting this I got notified that enough orders have been placed. Phew!

  1. How local does it need to be? I might know a guy who can help you out.

  2. Is bartering allowed? I have the backbones from 3 chickens I quartered in the freezer. I keep meaning to make stock but just haven't gotten around to it. I'm going to help process up in Sebastopol in a few weeks, so I won't have a shortage.

If you're willing to pay a little higher price for sustainably raised, organically fed chicken to might want to check out the following two farmers. I'll be processing at Mark's place next.

  3. Thanks for reminding me, I've actually got two older hens (duh!) we can turn into stock. I just can't justify spending $20+ on a bird for stock. Maybe eating - but even then it's tough when I've got chickens in my backyard just a few weeks away from being harvested.
